Impeached former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza welcomed United Opposition leaders to her Ntumbiri residence.
In a statement shared on social media early Sunday, March 8, 2026, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced his visit alongside Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Party leader Justin Bedan Muturi, and former Meru Senator Mithika Linturi. They expressed solidarity with Mwangaza and her husband, Murega Baichu, following what Gachagua termed a cruel impeachment by the current regime.
Gachagua emphasized that during a national crisis, political differences should fade, urging focus on the country’s future, which he believes is at risk of imminent collapse. He affirmed his commitment to uniting Kenyans for a decisive victory and national transformation.
Assuring Mwangaza of unwavering support, Gachagua noted that injustice against one Kenyan impacts all 55 million citizens.
In a recent interview with local radio stations from Meru County, Gachagua unexpectedly praised Mwangaza, including her in the United Opposition lineup, despite previously rarely mentioning her.
He acknowledged the presence of three political heavyweights from Meru, including Linturi, vying for the gubernatorial seat under the United Opposition, while asserting that Mwangaza could also contend without conflict. Gachagua affirmed her right to run, stating that only a legal upholding of the impeachment could bar her.
Linturi, once a fierce critic of Mwangaza, has softened his stance, claiming he was used in the impeachment push and revealing that approximately Ksh100 million was raised by Meru leaders to facilitate her removal.
This shift in tone among United Opposition leaders has caught the attention of political observers, suggesting that change may be on the horizon.
