The recent spat between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has reignited a political rivalry rooted in the 2022 succession debate and the struggle for influence in Mt. Kenya.
During his tour in the United States, Gachagua accused an unnamed politician of accepting KSh200 million to create a vehicle aimed at splitting the Mt. Kenya vote. Though he did not specify Nyoro, the comments followed Nyoro’s recent takeover of the People’s Party of Kenya, where he has positioned himself as a key independent opposition figure.
In response, on September 7, 2026, Nyoro cautioned leaders against using others to undermine him, asserting that his party operates independently and does not need external validation.
Tracing Back to 2022
This rivalry dates back to the search for William Ruto’s running mate ahead of the 2022 General Election. Nyoro was among the candidates considered before Ruto ultimately selected Gachagua.
Previously, Gachagua had endorsed Nyoro for a higher political position, commending him as a capable leader with the potential to serve the nation effectively.
Following the election, Nyoro’s rising profile sparked discussions about who would represent Mt. Kenya’s interests.
By February 2023, reports began to highlight a potential supremacy battle between Gachagua and Nyoro. Gachagua dismissed concerns about the rivalry, suggesting that younger leaders would naturally emerge to take the reins.
In early 2024, several Mt. Kenya leaders publicly supported Nyoro as a viable alternative to Gachagua for Ruto’s running mate.
