ODM’s Catherine Omanyo Tells Sifuna How to Keep SG Position

Catherine Omanyo, the Acting Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has outlined the steps Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna needs to take to regain his position within the party.

Omanyo emphasized that Sifuna must align himself with the party’s stance to be considered for reinstatement. During a recent interview with a local radio station on April 11, 2026, she pointed out that ODM does not expel members, citing President William Ruto as an example. Ruto, despite departing from the party years ago, remains a life member of the Orange Party.

“It is his choice to be retained; he must align with the party’s position,” Omanyo stated.

She further underscored that the decision rests with Sifuna, who must choose between staying with the party or facing exclusion. Omanyo reassured that there is no personal animosity towards the Nairobi senator, highlighting that ODM fosters a democratic environment where all members can express their views. However, she noted that democracy must have its limits.

Omanyo expressed optimism about Sifuna’s chances of retaining his position, contingent upon his acknowledgment of the responsibilities of a Secretary General, which she described as serving as the party’s spokesperson rather than pursuing personal ambitions.

“There is a significant opportunity for Sifuna to maintain his role, provided he understands that as Secretary General, he represents the party and not individual goals. The party’s decisions are final,” she articulated.

Regarding whether Sifuna should join the “Tutam” movement or support Ruto’s re-election, as many ODM members are doing, Omanyo clarified that the situation is more nuanced than simply choosing sides. She recalled the late Raila Odinga’s guidance, stating that the collaboration with William Ruto aims to stabilize the country and does not imply a commitment extending beyond 2027.
