The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has released a firm statement regarding the rising violence in Kasipul Constituency in anticipation of the by-election scheduled for November 27.
In a press release dated November 7, 2027, ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga stated, “The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party vehemently condemns the increasing acts of violence observed in Kasipul Constituency as we approach the by-election on the 27th of this month.”
The party conveyed significant concern over recent events, particularly a violent interruption of a voter engagement event led by their candidate, Boyd Were.
Wanga remarked, “We are profoundly troubled by reports indicating that a peaceful voter engagement organized by our candidate, Boyd Were, was violently interrupted yesterday by individuals linked to one of the candidates. The assaults resulted in casualties and instilled fear and anxiety within the community; regrettably, leading to loss of lives and leaving behind fear and tension among the community. During the Empowerment Programme in Sikri, numerous vehicles belonging to our candidate’s supporters were damaged, and the women present at the event faced harassment and injuries.
ODM has called for tranquility among all parties involved.
Wanga stated, “I urge all candidates and our supporters to behave in a peaceful manner and to avoid any inflammatory remarks or actions that could jeopardize peace during this campaign period and in the future.”
She emphasized ODM’s dedication to democratic principles, stating, “ODM is steadfastly committed to conducting peaceful campaigns and upholding democratic values that honor the will of the people. We encourage our supporters to stay calm, peaceful, and aligned with our ideals of unity.”
Calls for security action and fairness
In light of recent provocations, ODM has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining peace, with Wanga declaring, “In the face of significant provocation, our party and candidate have steadfastly upheld peace and decorum, opting for dialogue rather than confrontation.”
She further emphasized, “We want to make it unequivocally clear that ODM will not be cowed by acts of lawlessness intended to disrupt a free, fair, and peaceful election in Kasipul. The residents of Kasipul have the right to select their leader without fear, intimidation, or coercion.”
The party made specific appeals for action, with Wanga stating, “We urge security agencies to respond promptly and decisively to hold accountable those responsible for and funding these violent acts.” ODM also called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to guarantee fairness, asserting, “We implore the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to create a level playing field for all candidates.”
