Belgut Constituency Member of Parliament Nelson Koech has publicly criticized Nairobi Senator and Orange Democratic Movement Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, asserting that Sifuna’s opposition to the alliance between ODM and the United Democratic Alliance stems from self-serving motives.
Koech alleges that Sifuna harbored aspirations for a Cabinet Secretary nomination and reacted negatively upon being overlooked for the position. In an interview with a local television station on February 5, 2026, Koech articulated that Sifuna appears to prioritize his personal interests, feeling excluded from the negotiations regarding ODM’s involvement in a broader government framework. This perceived exclusion, according to Koech, explains Sifuna’s apparent dissent towards the party’s decisions.
“Edwin Sifuna sought the Cabinet Secretary position, and his disappointment has led to his erratic behavior. Observe the nature of the questions he directs at those who were selected, especially during Senate appearances,” Koech remarked. “His inquiries are deeply personal, revealing an underlying bitterness. I assure you, Edwin Sifuna explicitly requested the Cabinet Secretary role,” Koech stated.
The legislator emphasized that ODM party leader Oburu Odinga possesses the authority to make political choices on behalf of the party. He urged any dissenters to reconsider their affiliation with ODM.
Divisions within ODM
Following the passing of former ODM leader Raila Odinga, the party has witnessed significant ideological rifts, particularly regarding its strategic direction as the 2027 general elections approach. Leadership figures within the party have expressed conflicting viewpoints.
Currently, ODM is split into two factions: one advocates for collaboration with the government, supporting an alliance with the ruling UDA party, while the other faction opposes this approach, insisting that ODM should maintain its independence and present its own candidate for the upcoming elections.
