Jubilee Party’s vice chairman, David Murathe, has revealed some details about his private meeting with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua before Gachagua was removed from his role.
While speaking at the book launch for former Public Service Cabinet Secretary JB Muturi in Nairobi on Friday, November 8, 2025, Murathe mentioned that they had a private discussion before Gachagua was let go from the government while he was still serving as Deputy President.
Previously, Murathe had been quite critical of Gachagua, particularly leading up to the 2022 general elections when they were on opposing political sides.
Murathe went on to explain that during Gachagua’s last days in office, as tensions between him and President Ruto became more apparent, and the President’s supporters were taking every opportunity to criticize him, discussions about impeachment were already underway.
He disclosed that in their private meeting, Gachagua shared with him that if the government kept on targeting him like it was, he would eventually show up at JKIA with his own bag while attending government duties.
“You know, Riggy G, you know where we’ve come from. The last time I saw Riggy G was in a private setting, and he told me, ‘If these people keep messing with me, you’ll see me at the airport, going as deputy president with my suitcase in hand.’ I didn’t see him after that,” Murathe mentioned.
Call to United Opposition
This became quite clear in September 2024 when Gachagua halted the nation in its tracks after arriving at JKIA with his own suitcase.
The event sparked a significant reaction, leading the then Minority Leader Junet Mohammed to propose a motion to address the behavior of the then Deputy President, calling it a shame for the country.
Murathe continued to commend the former Deputy President, stating that he is more than capable and should be presented as the United Opposition’s candidate.
He also informed the United Opposition leaders that they are now just waiting for the “white smoke” after reaching an agreement on who the leading candidate will be.
Murathe went ahead to voice his support of the sentiments attributed to the former president, Uhuru Kenyatta, cautioning members of the Jubilee Party against insulting United Opposition leaders like Rigathi Gachagua, saying that he is unhappy with this trend and will expel them from the party should they continue with their unnecessary attacks on Gachagua.
