Kathiani MP Robert Mbui has thrown his weight behind Embakasi East MP Babu Owino’s bid for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, setting the stage for what could be a heated contest to unseat Governor Johnson Sakaja in 2027.
Speaking on Monday, September 29, Mbui praised his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) colleague, describing him as experienced and capable of managing the capital.
“I have served with Babu Owino in Parliament for two terms, and I am convinced he can deliver as governor. That is why we are saying Nairobi should only give Sakaja one term,” Mbui declared.
The endorsement adds momentum to Babu’s political ambitions, coming just days after he publicly rallied behind Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the opposition’s best bet against President William Ruto in 2027.
Kalonzo, in turn, appeared to reciprocate by hinting at a top leadership position for Babu within the recently restructured Wiper Party. He revealed that four deputy party leader slots would be created to strengthen the movement ahead of the elections.
“Babu, you are technically part of Azimio. If you feel sidelined, join the Patriotic Front so that we move forward together. We are reorganising our party to mirror ODM, with four deputy party leaders. I would like to see Babu take one of those positions,” Kalonzo said during a church service in Mlolongo.
Babu Owino has repeatedly challenged young Kenyans to register as voters, insisting that the ballot remains the only weapon to effect change. He also maintained that Kalonzo was the ideal candidate to replace Ruto, whom he accused of mismanaging the country.
The Embakasi East MP has, however, expressed uncertainty about whether his ODM Party will back his gubernatorial ambitions, making Mbui’s endorsement and Kalonzo’s offer a significant boost as succession politics begin to take shape in Nairobi.
