Lightning strikes three to death in Luanda town

A sombre mood engulfed Luanda town, Vihiga County, as three women were struck to death by lightning during yesterday’s heavy rain.

The yesterday’s incident took place in the evening when there was a heavy downpour. Eye witnesses said that the three – two women and a middle-aged girl – were selling bananas in the ever busy Luanda town, which is situated along Kisumu-Busia highway, Vihiga County.

While confirming the incident to the press over the phone, Luanda town Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) David Ndirangu said that he had received the bad news about the death of the three, and that it was very unfortunate that their lives could be lost in such circumstances. “I have been informed by the local authority that three people have been killed by lightning during this evening’s down pour,” Ndirangu said.

“It’s unfortunate that the three ladies had taken shade in a kiosk just beside the road,” he added.

By the time of going to press, the three bodies were still lying by the roadside where the death happened.

Such incidents are common in Luanda town and its environs, and locals have been urged to always take caution, and be on a high alert, to minimize deaths that would be occasioned by natural calamities such as lightnings – and even flash floods – among others.
