Kenya’s Premier League giants Gor Mahia have received a new shirt sponsorship deal barely two days after parting ways with Betafriq.

The club has now reunited with its erstwhile sponsor, SportPesa, in a period of less than five years since the two went separate ways. This comes in just less than 72 hours after another betting company, Betafriq, terminated their shirt sponsorship with K’ogalo under unclear circumstances. This is a great relief to the club since the immediate former sponsors had left the club in a very unfriendly situation, financially.

The sponsorship is worth Ksh. 240m for three years. This means that each year, the club will rake in Ksh.80m from Kenya’s betting giants.

Speaking on Friday during the unveiling of their new sponsorship deal Sportpesa, Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier was full of praises for the betting firm, exuding confidence that this time round, they have struck a goldmine.

“This partnership took a very short time to execute, actually a day. Karauri worked overtime, even picking my calls during parliamentary sessions,” Rachier said, praising the Sportpesa CEO Donald Karauri, who is now the newly elected Member of Parliament for Kasarani constituency.
“I hope that this marriage will go for a very long time. We should gauge what we read on social media. I cannot respond to crap. Most of you are out there writing nonsense,”

Previously, the two have had a rapport before the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) came up with heavy taxation policies towards betting companies – something that led to the Donald Karauri-led company withdraw its sponsorship from both Gor Mahia and AFC leopards.

“I want to thank Rachier for making this happen. In our history, we have achieved much with Gor. This is not only business. Mostly, we are driven by the urge to improve welfare of Gor Mahia players,” said the newly elected Mp for Kasarani constituency.

During the two’s previous engagement, the club was able to dine with the kings of global soccer when they were privileged to play on the much fancied Goodison Park stadium, against the then their high-flying hosts, Everton FC. The Kenyan outfit was also to play against Wolves FC. During the two outings against Everton, Kenyan lads managed to rub shoulders with the highly-rated Wayne Rooney and defender Fil Jagielka.

In this new partnership, the club was quick to add that the new sponsorship would not only stop at money, but there will also be insurance cover bill that Sportpesa will foot.
