Winnie Odinga: The Odinga name has put me in trouble

Azimio leader Raila Odinga’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, has said that the name ‘Raila’ has served her with both good and bad.

Speaking to Citizen TV’s Waihiga Mwaura, on yesterday’s live News Night interview, Raila Odinga’s daughter said that the name has served her negatively, contrary to what people out there would ever thought of. Winnie Odinga is the last born child of Raila Odinga, and has been in the forefront in many political activities of her father.

Out there, many people believe that a mere mention of Raila’s name would earn you a fortune in your life – or even a life-changing opportunity. However, Winnie Odinga has a completely different view on that assumption. “The name Odinga has gotten me very many things. It has gotten me into trouble, it’s gotten me abused, blamed for many things and persecuted,” she said.

She further said that there are a lot of good things that have also come because of the name ‘Odinga’. Alongside other special treatments, and high esteem, that Winnie Odinga has received from other quarters, she added that she has traveled in many countries around the world just because of her close association with high and mighty in the society. “However, being Raila’s daughter has enabled me to travel the world. To go to different places. I’ve been to every country in the East African Community except for Burundi,” she said.

Winnie Odinga described herself as a student, doctor, aunty, communicator and African. She has over the years worked on five presidential campaigns in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, DRC and Kenya (twice).

Winnie is currently one of the nominees for East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) position, and many Kenyans have weighed in, castigating the move to front her name – saying that she’s being considered for the job simply because she is Raila’s daughter. It’s noteworthy that in the last EALA parliament, Oburu Odinga, Raila Odinga’s elder brother, was also nominated to the position – where he served at till the last election in August when he was elected as Siaya County Senator.

Many people have now seen the trend as only benefitting one family due to its political influence and a place in the society. Winnie Odinga’s other siblings are Rosemary Odinga, Odinga Junior, and first born, the late Fidel Odinga (who died in 2015).
