Kenya has proudly secured the rights to host the prestigious World Geothermal Congress (WGC) 2029 in Nairobi, a significant milestone for its energy sector and a testament to its status as Africa’s geothermal leader.
Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira announced this exciting achievement while leading the Kenyan delegation at the 2026 WGC in Canada. This recognition highlights Kenya’s leadership in geothermal energy, boasting over 1,000 megawatts of installed capacity and a potential exceeding 10 gigawatts.
Wachira emphasized that this successful bid showcases Kenya’s growing impact on the global shift toward clean and renewable energy. “Geothermal energy serves as a catalyst for economic transformation, energy security, climate resilience, and sustainable prosperity,” he stated.
The WGC is the largest international gathering of geothermal experts, policymakers, investors, researchers, and industry leaders, held every three years. It provides an essential platform for showcasing technological advancements, sharing research, and discussing supportive policies for geothermal development worldwide.
Hosting the congress in Nairobi presents a unique chance for Kenya and Africa to demonstrate their geothermal potential on a global stage. “This event will place Kenya and Africa at the heart of discussions on the future of geothermal energy, innovation, and sustainable development,” Wachira added.
The congress is set to attract thousands of delegates globally, fostering investment opportunities, knowledge exchange, and partnerships in the renewable energy sector.
Recognized as a global leader in geothermal development, Kenya ranks among the top producers of geothermal energy worldwide. Much of its geothermal power comes from the Olkaria fields in the Rift Valley, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and supporting the government’s clean energy agenda.
Industry stakeholders believe that awarding Nairobi the hosting rights will enhance Kenya’s profile as a renewable energy investment hub and amplify Africa’s voice in global climate and energy discussions. The congress will also spotlight emerging opportunities in geothermal exploration across the continent, as countries seek reliable, low-carbon energy to fuel economic growth and industrialization.
With this successful bid, Kenya joins an elite group of nations that have hosted this influential global conference, further solidifying its reputation as a leader in sustainable energy development.
