Kenya Red Cross Volunteer Dies During Mbagathi River Rescue

The Kenya Red Cross Society mourns the loss of veteran aqua rescue volunteer Samuel Wangila, who tragically died while responding to an emergency on March 3, 2026, along the Mbagathi River in Nairobi.

Wangila, a dedicated volunteer for over 15 years, lost his life during a rescue operation following a distress call about a young boy who had drowned. The organization highlighted his extensive experience and reliability in aqua rescue missions across the country.

In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross expressed its deep sorrow: “Samuel Wanyonyi Wangila, our committed Aqua Rescue volunteer, died in the line of duty while responding to an emergency at Highrise. His dedication to saving lives was unmatched.”

Wangila received a Special Recognition Award in 2025 for his contributions to aqua rescue efforts nationwide. He actively trained and mentored fellow volunteers, enhancing the organization’s response capabilities.

Colleagues remembered him as courageous and professional, always ready to serve in any situation.

The Kenya Red Cross extends heartfelt condolences to his wife, family, friends, and fellow volunteers, standing in solidarity during this difficult time. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them as we honor a life devoted to service. Rest in peace, Samuel; your legacy endures in the lives you saved,” the organization stated.

Founded in 1965 under the Kenya Red Cross Society Act, the Kenya Red Cross Society is the only National Red Cross Society in Kenya, recognized for its voluntary aid efforts alongside public authorities.
