Karua Revives 2022 Election Row with Fresh Attack on Chebukati

Martha Karua, the leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), expressed strong sentiments regarding former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati, suggesting that his soul should face turmoil wherever it may be.

During an engaging interview with political analyst Herman Manyora on his YouTube podcast, aired on July 3, 2026, Karua stood by her comments, emphasizing that it lies beyond human judgment to determine the fate of Chebukati’s soul.

“May Chebukati’s soul be troubled,” she declared.

Karua attributed the 2022 presidential election loss faced by Azimio to Chebukati, asserting that he oversaw an electoral process that favored President William Ruto. She pointed out that Raila Odinga won in 27 counties, while Ruto secured victory in only 20, arguing that the county-by-county results contradicted the final presidential outcome announced by the IEBC.

She highlighted that in the larger counties, Ruto only emerged victorious in Kiambu and Meru, while Raila dominated populous areas like Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kakamega, Kisumu, and Narok. Karua insisted that reconciling the results was challenging, stating, “It’s impossible to understand how a candidate who won in 20 counties could defeat one who won in 27. That’s what I call ‘Chebukati’s mathematics.’”

Turning to the presidential results, Karua raised concerns about the extended duration taken to announce them. She argued that vote counting occurs at polling stations and should conclude within hours after voting ends.

She insisted that a transparent aggregation of results ought to be completed by election night, asserting that by midnight, the counting process should be largely finalized. Karua criticized the extended periods for announcing presidential results, urging Kenyans to reject such delays.

Her statements reignite the ongoing debate surrounding the 2022 General Election outcome, where Azimio leaders have consistently claimed that the presidential results did not mirror the voters’ will, despite the IEBC declaring William Ruto the winner, a decision later upheld by the Supreme Court.
