Kalonzo Pays Emotional Tribute to Raila at London Summit

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka delivered a moving tribute to the late Raila Odinga during the Tenth Anniversary of the London Political Summit and Awards Ceremony held at the House of Commons.

The emotional speech came just hours after news broke that the former Prime Minister had passed away in India, where he had been receiving treatment. Speaking to dignitaries gathered in the historic chamber, Kalonzo described Raila as “a dear brother” and “the champion of the Second Liberation,” before leading the audience in a moment of silence.

“It is deeply saddening that we gather in this house of democracy at a time when Africa has lost one of its greatest democrats,” he said. “Prime Minister Raila Odinga dedicated his life to justice and people-centred governance. His endurance through torture and detention spoke to his unmatched courage and faith in a freer Kenya.”

Kalonzo reflected on Raila’s instrumental role in delivering Kenya’s 2010 Constitution, describing it as the culmination of his lifelong dream to shift power from the presidency to the people.

“Raila’s vision gave us a constitution that brought governance closer to the people. It was a turning point in our nation’s history, and for that, we owe him immense gratitude,” Kalonzo said.

He noted that Kenya and the African continent were in mourning, with the national flag flying at half-mast in honour of the departed leader. Kalonzo also announced that he would adjust his UK engagements to dedicate more time to honouring Raila’s memory.

“Raila was a mentor, a comrade, and a friend. His wisdom, resilience, and courage shaped my own political path. His passing is not just Kenya’s loss—it is Africa’s,” he said.
