Argentina Beat Switzerland to Reach World Cup Semi-Finals

Argentina’s Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez delivered a thrilling performance, scoring in the dying moments of extra time to clinch a dramatic 3-1 victory over 10-man Switzerland in the quarter-finals. This triumph sets the stage for an electrifying semi-final showdown against England in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina continues its quest to become the first team to successfully defend the World Cup title since Brazil in 1962. The victory ignited a wave of jubilation among the passionate sky-blue-and-white supporters, while it marked the end of Switzerland’s remarkable journey in the tournament.

Despite reaching the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954, Switzerland fell just short of an unprecedented semi-final appearance. Their hopes took a significant hit when Breel Embolo received a red card for diving in the 72nd minute.

The match, Kansas City’s final game of the tournament, seemed poised for a shootout until Alvarez unleashed a stunning long-range shot in the 112th minute, leaving goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with no chance to save. Nine minutes later, Martinez sealed the deal by calmly finishing the rebound from Thiago Almada’s shot.

Argentina took the lead early in the 10th minute, with Alexis Mac Allister flicking a header from Messi’s corner into the far corner of the net, marking the first time Switzerland had trailed in the tournament.

The Swiss team displayed tenacity, refusing to back down. After a relatively quiet first half, the game erupted as Switzerland continuously challenged Emiliano Martinez, prompting a series of impressive saves that energized the South American fans.

With pressure mounting, Switzerland equalized in the 67th minute when Dan Ndoye linked up with Ricardo Rodriguez and slotted a right-footed finish through Martinez’s legs, igniting cheers from the Swiss supporters.

However, the tide turned when Embolo received a second yellow card for simulation after a lengthy VAR review, leading to a heartbreaking exit as he left the pitch in tears, comforted by his teammates.

In response, Argentina seized control, pressing Switzerland back for extended periods. The atmosphere was electric, as fans transformed Arrowhead Stadium into a vibrant Buenos Aires, chanting “Vamos, vamos!” as the team surged forward.

At 39 years old, Messi nearly decided the match in stoppage time with a powerful strike that narrowly missed the post. Switzerland held firm against relentless pressure and looked set to push for a shootout, but Argentina broke through in the final moments of extra time, sealing their place in the semi-finals.
