Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed has firmly dismissed the speculation surrounding Babu Owino’s potential rise as the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) through the party’s National Delegates Convention (NDC).
In an interview with a local TV station on the evening of Wednesday, January 21, 2026, Junet acknowledged Babu Owino’s political aspirations. He pointed out that while Owino may have a viable path to becoming the Nairobi County governor, the internal structures of ODM do not support his chances in party elections.
“Babu Owino has a chance of becoming a governor, but he lacks the backing to win the NDC. I understand the party’s structures, and they do not favor him,” Junet stated.
He further clarified that even if Owino were to achieve an unexpected victory at the NDC, he would legally assume the role of party leader, questioning the rationale behind viewing this as an issue.
“I don’t foresee him winning, but if he does, he will rightfully become the party leader. What is the problem?” Junet emphasized, underscoring the openness and democratic nature of the party’s processes.
In contrast, Babu Owino has expressed unwavering confidence in his pursuit of the ODM leadership, assuring Kenyans and party supporters that he remains steadfast in his ambitions.
Despite facing significant opposition from some party leaders, Owino declared his commitment to his mission, stating that nothing would deter him from his goal.
During an interview on a local radio station on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, he robustly defended his intention to lead ODM, asserting his readiness to confront the challenges posed by the NDC.
“I can only move forward; I do not have reverse gears. I understand that maintaining faith can be difficult for some, and while opinions about me may vary, I hold similar views about them,” Owino articulated.
The MP urged those opposing his bid to take a moment to comprehend the motivations behind his decision.
Previously, Babu Owino has called for the convening of the ODM NDC, emphasizing his desire to assume leadership of the party.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms on Thursday, January 8, 2025, he expressed the urgency to gather the NDC—the highest decision-making body of the party—so he can lead ODM.
Currently, the leadership of the ODM party rests with Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, who assumed the role following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
