Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has expressed his intention to leave the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and lead his supporters to the Linda Mwananchi movement if ODM does not issue an apology regarding its alleged backing of candidates associated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Lenku emphasized that ODM’s ongoing collaboration with non-party politicians represents a betrayal to its supporters in Kajiado, cautioning that the party risks losing its influence in the region.
“ODM will cease to operate in Kajiado County. We are the ones who established ODM here and earned it respect,” Lenku asserted.
He highlighted that the party’s support in Kajiado has been cultivated through the dedication of local leaders and supporters who have remained loyal to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“We are prepared to part ways if the party continues to let us down,” Lenku stated.
The governor called for an apology from the ODM leadership for permitting party officials to campaign for candidates seeking positions on UDA-aligned platforms.
“We expect the ODM leadership to apologize for endorsing politicians who are not party members,” he stated.
Lenku warned that ODM could face a similar fate as UDA in Kajiado, following the recent defections of several MCAs elected under the ruling party to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“Just as UDA MCAs transitioned to DCP, we too will move to Linda Mwananchi,” he said.
He noted that ODM’s current strength in Kajiado stems from local supporters who revitalized the party during its challenging beginnings in the county.
“When we found ODM, it was weak; out of respect for the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, we strengthened it in Kajiado,” Lenku explained.
His comments arise amidst heightened political realignments in Kajiado in anticipation of the 2027 General Election, as competing political groups strive to broaden their grassroots presence and attract elected leaders.
Gachagua has recently intensified his mobilization efforts in the county, aiming to position DCP as a formidable political entity before the 2027 elections.
The former Deputy President recently welcomed 10 Kajiado MCAs and an aspiring candidate into DCP, with new members coming from both UDA and ODM.
This development was presented by Gachagua as a testament to the growing grassroots support for his party, particularly among elected officials seeking a political platform that addresses their constituents’ concerns.
