Impeachment threat looms over acting South Korean President

South Korea’s main opposition party has threatened to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo if he does not enact a law to initiate a special counsel investigation into President Yoon Suk Yeol’s controversial attempt to impose martial law.

Han, who stepped in after Yoon’s suspension following his impeachment on December 14, faces scrutiny from the opposition Democratic Party, which holds a majority in Parliament.

The Democratic Party recently passed a bill to appoint a special counsel to investigate potential charges of insurrection against Yoon. They accuse Han of facilitating Yoon’s martial law efforts and have reported him to the police. Party leader Park Chan-dae warned that impeachment proceedings would commence if the law is not promulgated by Tuesday, asserting that delays indicate Han’s lack of constitutional compliance.

Han, a seasoned technocrat with three decades of political experience, previously claimed he attempted to prevent Yoon’s martial law declaration but later apologized for not succeeding. The opposition also alleges that Yoon is obstructing the Constitutional Court proceedings by refusing to accept necessary documents.

A joint investigative team has made another attempt to question Yoon regarding the martial law incident, with police having previously tried to enter his office without success. The situation remains tense as the investigation continues, with the potential for significant political ramifications in South Korea.
