Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has announced immediate changes to the security team protecting President William Samoei Ruto after a security breach at a public event in Ganze on Saturday. He described the incident as a serious lapse and a matter of “gravest national concern.”
The breach occurred on May 24, 2026, during a Thanksgiving event where Ruto was addressing the public. A young man approached the President mid-speech, causing a moment of confusion as security swiftly intervened.
Despite the disruption, President Ruto calmly instructed his security personnel to treat the young man gently. “Leave that young man alone,” he said, as officers escorted him away. Ruto reassured the crowd, insisting there was no need for alarm and humorously remarked, “I will deal with him later,” eliciting laughter from the audience.
While the motives behind the young man’s actions remain unclear, Inspector General Kanja emphasized that any compromise to the President’s security is unacceptable. He announced a special investigations team to thoroughly examine the breach and implement immediate restructuring of the security detail to enhance protocols.
“The security of the Head of State is of utmost importance,” Kanja stated, urging the public to adhere strictly to security measures during presidential events. He warned that any attempts to breach security will be dealt with firmly.
The National Police Service remains dedicated to safeguarding the country’s leadership and preventing future incidents. Changes are planned within the Presidential Escort Unit, led by Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police Noah Maiyo.
The President is supported by a robust security team, including about 200 guards from the GSU, and receives additional assistance from local police during his visits. Security protocols ensure that armed officers, especially those with rifles, are restricted at events.
This incident is not the first security scare for President Ruto. In February, a similar situation occurred in Mombasa when an unidentified man rushed towards him during a youth empowerment event. The President, displaying his approachable nature, engaged the man in a light-hearted exchange, bringing laughter to the audience.
These events highlight the importance of effective security measures and the commitment to ensuring the safety of the President and the public.
