ICT CS Eliud Owalo distributes relief food in Nyanza

ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo last weekend presided over the distribution of government relief food in Homa Bay, Nyando and Ugunja constituencies of Nyanza province.

The minister posted on his social media, “On behalf of H.E. the President, Dr. William Samoei Ruto, this afternoon I launched relief food distribution for the residents of Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County.”

According to the Cabinet Secretary, the food distribution was a presidential initiative intended to provide relief for the most vulnerable and underprivileged citizens most affected by the current drought situation.

Owalo was accompanied by among other leaders, Ndhiwa D.C.C. Ahmed Somo, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, Okoth Obado, Martin Ogindo, Kennedy Obuya and U.D.A. County Coordinator, John Odek.

“As we undertake this emergency intervention the government is working to put in place permanent and sustainable mechanisms for food security.” said Owalo.

The CS has however been criticised by some residents who say that he should focus on his core mandate in the ICT ministry and let the relevant government department in charge of relief services to handle food relief.

Journalist Saddique Shaban tweeted “Someone’s distributing relief food to residents of Koru, Muhoroni? Isn’t this a shameless political posturing? This area is one of the most fertile region in Kisumu, with plenty of small scale subsistence farming. Plenty of food is available here and from neighbouring areas.”
