Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced his commitment to unite with all Kenyans in a concerted effort to contest President William Ruto’s administration and diminish his chances for re-election in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Since his impeachment last October, Gachagua has been vocal in his criticisms of Ruto’s government. On Monday, he joined forces with opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa during the launch of Wamalwa’s new DAP Party headquarters in Nairobi. “We are part of this team and will walk this journey together to liberate this country,” Gachagua asserted, emphasizing their readiness to make necessary sacrifices to ensure that Ruto serves only one term.
Notably, Gachagua has been actively building alliances with former political rivals since his departure from government. Last weekend, he visited Martha Karua, the NARC Kenya party leader and former running mate to Raila Odinga in the 2022 elections. Bearing gifts symbolic of goodwill in Kikuyu culture—goats, sheep, and farm produce—Gachagua and Karua pledged to expand their coalition to challenge what they described as Ruto’s “dictatorship.”
In addition, Gachagua has been conducting a series of consultative meetings at his residence in Wamunyoro, Nyeri County, engaging with leaders from various sectors as he strategizes his political future. With these alliances taking shape, Gachagua seems determined to reshape the political landscape and rally support against the current administration.
