Gachagua Accuses Ruto of Targeting Chief Justice Martha Koome ahead of 2027 polls

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised serious allegations regarding a purported scheme to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome from her position. Speaking to congregants at the Meru PCEA Church on Sunday, January 26, Gachagua asserted that the current administration, led by President William Ruto, is orchestrating an elaborate plan to oust Koome.

Gachagua pointed to the recent withdrawal of Koome’s security detail as an intimidation tactic aimed at pressuring her into resignation. He further claimed that the Kenya Kwanza government is intent on dismantling the Supreme Court in preparation for the upcoming 2027 General Election.

According to Gachagua, funds have allegedly been allocated through the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to support this effort. “We have identified a scheme to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome from office. There is an even larger plan to dismantle the Supreme Court before the elections. A budget has already been set aside through NIS, and all the petitions you are witnessing against Koome and the Supreme Court judges are part of the state’s machinations,” he stated.

Additionally, Gachagua highlighted the recent petitions filed with the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) against the seven Supreme Court judges, asserting that these actions are part of the government’s strategy to reshape the court to align with their interests. “All those petitions in the Supreme Court are government-driven, aiming to install a bench that suits the desires of those in power,” he remarked.

In light of these developments, Gachagua urged Chief Justice Martha Koome to remain steadfast in her role, emphasizing her vital contributions despite the mounting criticism. “I want to encourage my sister, Lady Justice Martha Koome: do not be intimidated. Stay strong. You are doing an excellent job. Continue to uphold the rule of law and constitutionalism in our country,” he concluded.
