Former India’s President Pranab Mukherjee has died aged 84. The former head of state passed on on Monday 31st of August 2020 at Army’s Research and Referral hospital in New Delhi after prolonged illness.
This was announced by his son Abhijit Mukherjee via a twitter post.
His passing comes weeks after having tested positive for Covid-19. He had a brain surgery to remove a clot, but he later developed lung infection and renal dysfunction.
Pranab Mukherjee had been the Indian president from 2012-2017. His predecessor Pratibha Patil in his tribute said “He has left an indelible mark on the nation’s development trajectory”.
Before his demise the late Pranab was awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna and conferred Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
