Francis Wangusi, who was the Director General at the Communication Authority has passed on this afternoon, at Nairobi Hospital.
Mr Wangusi passed on after many days of struggling with disease. However, details of the disease that has claimed his life are still not yet in public domain. Mr Francis Wangusi was the DG for the Communication Authority (CA) from the year 2012 to year 2019, when his two terms of four-year each came to an end. Nevertheless, his exit from the CA was not smoothsailing – even though he had completed his contract.
An altercation with Cabinet Secretary for Information Communication and Technology Mr Joe Mucheru saw the former DG extend his stay at the helm of Communications Authority for an extra four months, against the law. According to Wangusi, the ICT Cabinet Secretary only wanted to bring in a junior officer – who lacked what it takes to run a parastatal – to be his successor. In an interview with a local radio station, Wangusi dismissed his successor’s appointment and said he would not hand over.
“They are bringing in the most junior person, and I found it even difficult to make her run a department, I saw the news on media,” he said. Mr Joe Mucheru had appointed Mrs Wanjau, who was then a commercial lawyer and a regulatory and governance professional at the CA, to replace the embattled Mr Francis Wangusi. Mrs Wanjau had also previously worked at KPMG South Africa, PricewaterhouseCoopers Kenya and the UN-International Telecommunications Union.
