Interior cabinet secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i and the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutayambi appeared before the Senate security committee for grilling following orders given by Speaker Kenneth Lusaka on Monday 17 over the arrest of three senators. Matiang’i and and Mutayambi arrived at the senate building Wednesday 19 morning with heavy security.
Journalists who went to cover the grilling proceedings were however denied the entrance and instead kicked out by the National security committee chairman Yusuf Haji. Haji said that he never invited the media to cover the story. “I don’t remember inviting you here, go back we shall call you later!” Haji told journalists.
This is Dr Matiangi’s first appearance before the committee after failing to adhere to the senate’s summons four times.
Speaker Lusaka had ordered the interior Cabinet secretary and police inspector general to appear before them on or before Wednesday, following the dramatic Monday arrest of senators Cleophas Malala (Kakamega), Steve Lelegwe (Samburu) and Christopher Langat (Bomet).
