Controller of Budget flags extravagant travel spending by Government officials

The Controller of Budget has raised concerns over excessive travel expenditures across the three arms of government, with Members of Parliament (MPs) leading the way in spending lavishly on both domestic and foreign trips.

According to the first-quarter report, Ksh. 3.5 billion was spent on travel within just four months, comprising Ksh. 2.5 billion for local travel and Ksh. 1 billion for international trips.

The report highlights that MPs have engaged in what has been termed “honourable extravagance,” with National Assembly members alone spending Ksh. 870 million on domestic travel and Ksh. 173 million on foreign trips during this period. The Senate is also under scrutiny, having spent Ksh. 345.7 million on domestic travel and Ksh. 80.6 million abroad.

Other parliamentary departments, including the Parliamentary Service Commission, reported Ksh. 10.7 million spent on travel, while the Parliamentary Joint Services consumed Ksh. 94.6 million in the same timeframe.

In contrast, the Office of the President spent Ksh. 11 million on domestic travel and Ksh. 1.3 million internationally. State House expenditures included Ksh. 43 million on domestic trips and Ksh. 5.8 million on foreign travel from July to October.

This extravagant spending has raised eyebrows, showing a clear disregard for the austerity measures outlined by President William Ruto. The Controller of Budget’s findings have sparked discussions about the need for greater accountability and fiscal responsibility among government officials.
