Gachagua flees as tear gas is thrown at thanksgiving event

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was forced to flee for safety after a tear gas canister was thrown near where he was seated during a thanksgiving event for Shamata Ward MCA Gitau Njamba in Nyandarua.

The event quickly descended into chaos, leaving several attendees injured and police overwhelmed by an angry crowd.

The incident occurred while Nyandarua Senator John Methu was delivering his speech. What was meant to be a celebration turned into a distressing scene, with clergy members also caught up in the turmoil. Eyewitnesses reported broken chairs and a frustrated audience as the atmosphere shifted dramatically.

The main suspect, a man in civilian clothing alleged to be a police officer, was handcuffed by police as the crowd demanded justice. Tensions flared between law enforcement and attendees, leading to a fierce confrontation that forced the police to retreat.

“You cannot govern people by force and you cannot force them to do what you want,” Gachagua stated, emphasizing the need for dialogue to understand the public’s grievances. He expressed concerns about rising political tensions, recalling a similar attack he experienced in Limuru a month prior. Gachagua accused the government of orchestrating these attacks against him.

In response to the incident, police have initiated an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. The turmoil at the event highlights the increasing political intolerance in the country, raising concerns about the safety of public gatherings and political discourse.
