The Busia Youth Caucus has called for the immediate resignation of Senator Okiya Omtatah, expressing disappointment over what they describe as his neglect of senatorial duties in favor of activism and litigation. The youth, frustrated by Omtatah’s lack of focus on the responsibilities entrusted to him by the residents of Busia, are demanding accountability and effective representation.
Elected with the promise of advocating for the interests of Busia residents, Senator Omtatah was expected to hold the county government accountable and ensure that allocated funds are used transparently and effectively. However, the youth argue that his preoccupation with activism has overshadowed these critical responsibilities.
“Omtatah’s endless activism seems more about self-promotion than meaningful change for Busia,” said a representative of the Busia Youth Caucus. They criticized his focus on filing lawsuits and engaging in public spectacles, which they believe has left a significant gap in the oversight role essential for the county’s governance.
The consequences of Omtatah’s neglect are being felt across Busia, where inefficiencies and mismanagement within the county government persist. Residents are suffering from inadequate services, poor infrastructure, and unfulfilled development promises.
The Busia Youth Caucus has issued an ultimatum, demanding Omtatah’s resignation effective immediately. They argue that if he wishes to continue his activism, he should do so as a private citizen. Furthermore, they condemned his recent activities, suggesting that they resemble conmanship and extortion through litigation.
Should Omtatah fail to resign, the youth have vowed to mobilize civil society organizations and well-wishers to collect signatures for a recall petition in accordance with the Kenyan Constitution. The stakes are high, as the youth are determined to hold their elected officials accountable.
Additionally, the youth cautioned Kenyans regarding Omtatah’s rumored presidential ambitions, warning, “If he wants to run for president, we must ask ourselves if we are ready for a leader who spends more time in court than in governance.”
This call for accountability follows recent reports on Nyanza Daily that highlight Senator Omtatah’s controversial actions, including his focus on litigation over legislative duties. In one article, titled “Okiya Omtatah’s Activism Raises Eyebrows,” it was noted how his pursuits seem to overshadow pressing local issues (read more at Nyanzadaily.co.ke).
As the youth of Busia rally for change, their demands echo a broader call for responsible leadership and effective governance in the region.
