The recently elected Baringo Senator Vincent Kiprono Chemitei urged President William Ruto to stay in office past the two-term limit. He compared it to the late President Daniel arap Moi’s long rule.
Chemitei spoke at the Kimalel Goat Auction in Baringo on Monday, December 22, 2025. He praised Ruto highly. He said Baringo people like to back leaders for many years.
The county picked Moi for four terms. Chemitei said locals want Ruto to serve that long too. “Moi came from Baringo. We did not vote for five or ten years. We voted 20 years and more. If your work looks good, we want to vote for you like Moi, not just five or 20 years,” he stated.
Chemitei praised Ruto with a chapati example. He said the president cooked just one side so far. Give him another term to finish the job. “You know, if you let a cook make chapati, you must let him do the other side. You can’t eat chapati with just one side cooked,” he added.
These words come amid a Senate motion to stretch leaders’ terms from five to seven years. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei proposed it. Public input happened in October. It’s still pending.
Cherargei claims five years is too short to finish projects. Many leaders oppose it. Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah leads the critics. He said the motion failed in committee but reached Second Reading anyway.
Omtatah noted the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee found it would cause bigger constitutional issues.
Chemitei won a by-election on November 27, 2025. It replaced the late William Cheptumo. He thanked Ruto for helping in the race.
The president convinced former senator Gideon Moi to drop out. Chemitei said that cleared his path to win.
