Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu expressed that she wasn’t surprised when portions of the crowd interrupted her with “One Term” chants during an endometriosis awareness event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Sunday.
While addressing thousands at Natalie Githinji’s Endometriosis Warriors event on September 27, 2026, she encountered these interruptions.
Nyamu anticipated this reaction, recognizing that the event was organized by activist Eric Omondi, who has been vocal in his criticism of the government.
“I expected this because Eric Omondi, who has been actively challenging the government, organized the event,” Nyamu stated.
She acknowledged the choice to stay away but chose to attend, driven by her commitment to endometriosis awareness and her responsibilities in Parliament.
“I had the option to stay away, but I can’t let ‘One Term’ chants deter me from my mission,” she affirmed.
“I will speak my truth and continue my work on endometriosis in Parliament.”
Nyamu shared that heckling isn’t unfamiliar to her, as she often faces similar comments on social media.
“On social media, I see comments like ‘One Term’ regularly. It’s part of the landscape I navigate,” she noted.
She has decided to rise above the chants and maintain her focus on her work.
“You’ve seen how I handle it—I choose to ignore it,” she explained.
Nyamu emphasized that public support isn’t guaranteed, even when leaders strive to do good, urging herself and her peers to stay committed to their duties.
“I have a purpose. Not everyone will support you, even when you’re doing great work,” she said.
She also predicted that such chants would continue to echo during her public engagements.
“It’s essential to concentrate on your goals. I know more ‘One Term’ chants will come my way,” Nyamu concluded.
