Authorities are currently investigating an incident involving two Chinese nationals and their Kenyan driver, who were reportedly robbed of Sh3.9 million. This occurred when a group of men, posing as police officers, intercepted their vehicle along the Nairobi-Keroka Road in Nyamira County.
The incident was documented on Saturday, September 19, 2026. According to police reports, the victims were traveling through the Mekenene area when they were overtaken by a Toyota Probox, adorned with floral decorations typically associated with wedding vehicles.
The Probox allegedly forced the victims’ blue BMW to halt. Witnesses have stated that two men emerged from the Probox, carrying items resembling walkie-talkies, leading the victims to believe they were legitimate police officers. Consequently, the driver stopped the vehicle.
The suspects then reportedly assaulted the occupants, kicking them before seizing the Sh3.9 million in cash, a Huawei mobile phone valued at Sh50,000, and personal belongings worth approximately Sh200,000, along with confidential company documents. The victims also lost their identification cards and other important credentials during the incident.
After the robbery, the attackers quickly returned to their vehicle and fled the scene. Police have confirmed that an investigation into the attack is underway and are exploring the possibility of an inside job.
A dedicated team has been established to pursue this matter, and officials have begun interrogating the victims as part of the investigation.
There has been a slight uptick in similar incidents where gunmen target individuals immediately after they leave banks. Others have been robbed of cash left in their vehicles post-bank visits. Authorities are actively pursuing the gangs responsible for this trend, with some members already apprehended and prosecuted.
Investigations indicate that certain gang members may be lurking in banking halls, monitoring transactions before trailing and attacking their targets. Some have insider information that aids in their criminal activities.
