Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan has officially joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), a move that strengthens the party ahead of the 2027 General Election, aligning with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Yusuf has expressed his intention to seek a fifth term as MP for Kamukunji under this new political affiliation and has also revealed his aspirations for the presidency in 2027, aiming to garner support for Gachagua.
“We have embraced DCP and committed to supporting Rigathi Gachagua in his quest for the presidency in 2027,” Yusuf, who secured his fourth consecutive term as Kamukunji MP in the 2022 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket, stated.
Yusuf first assumed office as the MP for Kamukunji Constituency in August 2011, winning in a parliamentary by-election on a Party of National Unity (PNU) ticket.
This development coincides with Gachagua’s intensified efforts in political mobilization and consultations with various communities and leaders in preparation for the upcoming elections.
DCP Addresses Ethnic Politics Concerns
During a reception for new members at DCP headquarters in Nairobi, DCP Secretary-General designate and Nyandarua Senator John Methu highlighted that Hassan’s entry into the party illustrates DCP’s commitment to inclusivity, welcoming Kenyans from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
He challenged assertions that the party was founded on ethnic lines by referencing Hassan’s participation. “You claimed this party represented only certain ethnic groups. Yet, here we are, accepting Yusuf, who represents a different background. This party is for everyone across Kenya!” Methu asserted.
He pointed to DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala as another example of the party’s diversity, emphasizing that leaders from various communities are integral to DCP.
“While some claim this party is ethnically biased, our deputy party leader, Malala, embodies the blend of cultures. He communicates in both Kikuyu and Luhya, and he is part of our team,” he added.
Methu affirmed that Hassan’s joining reinforces the party’s mission to broaden its national appeal as political organizations gear up for the next election.
Gachagua Enhances National Engagement
Hassan’s decision aligns with heightened political activity within DCP, as Gachagua engages with leaders and communities to build networks for the 2027 elections.
On July 29, Gachagua hosted members of the Somali community at his Wamunyoro residence, describing this engagement as a vital step in strengthening connections between the community and his political movement.
“Our partnership with the Somali community is essential for our future. As a leader from Mount Kenya and for all of Kenya, I will ensure that no one can disrupt our bond with the Somali people,” Gachagua declared.
The former deputy president has also welcomed elected leaders and political aspirants to Wamunyoro, as DCP aims to expand its national footprint. Notable defections to DCP include Isaac Waihenya Ndirangu, MP for Roysambu Constituency, and 14 chairpersons from various constituencies.
“I wholeheartedly welcome MP Hassan into the DCP family as he embarks on this new journey. His membership will not only strengthen our party but also enhance the representation of the Somali community within broader leadership circles,” Gachagua remarked.
DCP Accelerates 2027 Mobilization
The party continues to attract a diverse range of leaders as political realignments intensify in anticipation of the 2027 General Election.
Mathus also criticized President William Ruto, emphasizing that political differences should not fracture communities. “William Ruto is a common adversary, and he stands against us all,” Mathus stated.
Hassan’s inclusion in DCP adds to the party’s expanding roster of political figures, as Gachagua strategically positions the party for the upcoming presidential race in 2027.
