Justice Omondi Tunya Remembered as CJ Koome Pays Tribute

Chief Justice Martha Koome has led the Judiciary in honoring the memory of retired High Court Judge Justice Omondi Tunya, recognizing him as a remarkable jurist whose decades of dedicated service significantly strengthened Kenya’s justice system and upheld the rule of law.

In a heartfelt condolence message on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, CJ Koome shared her deep sorrow over the loss of the retired judge and offered her heartfelt sympathies to his family and colleagues.

“It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of (Rtd.) Hon. Justice Omondi Tunya,” Koome expressed.

“On my behalf and on behalf of the Judiciary of Kenya, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the honor of knowing and working alongside him during his esteemed judicial career.”

Justice Tunya dedicated over thirty years to Kenya’s Judiciary, advancing through the ranks after earning his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1973. He began his judicial journey in 1974 as a District Magistrate, launching a career characterized by consistent promotions and increased responsibility.

He rose to the position of Senior Resident Magistrate in 1982, became a Principal Magistrate in 1987, and took on the role of Nairobi Chief Magistrate in 1990, before eventually joining the High Court as a judge.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Justice Tunya gained recognition as one of Kenya’s most prominent judicial officers, presiding over politically sensitive cases during the one-party era under former President Daniel arap Moi and the Kenya African National Union (KANU) government.

Among the significant cases he handled were those involving suspected members of the underground Mwakenya movement, an opposition network that challenged the Moi administration. His adept handling of these high-profile cases positioned him at the forefront of Kenya’s evolving judicial history during a politically charged time.

Koome commended Justice Tunya’s steadfast commitment to justice throughout his career.

“Justice Tunya dedicated many years to the fair administration of justice in Kenya. He began as a Magistrate and rose to the High Court, where he served with distinction, diligence, and an unwavering commitment to timely justice,” she remarked.

She also highlighted, “Through his loyal service, he played a crucial role in strengthening the rule of law and advancing justice in our nation.”

As the Judiciary grieves the loss of one of its esteemed judges, Koome affirmed the institution’s solidarity with Justice Tunya’s family.

“We hope they find strength, comfort, and solace in the cherished memories of his life and the lasting legacy of his service to the people of Kenya,” she added.

“May the Almighty grant the late (Rtd.) Hon. Justice Omondi Tunya eternal rest, and may his soul find everlasting peace.”

Justice Tunya leaves behind an enduring legacy as a judicial officer who rose from the magistracy to the High Court, serving Kenya through times of significant political and legal transformation while remaining steadfast in his commitment to justice.
