Mbadi Defends Record, Amidst Winnie Odinga’s Criticism

The Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi is defending his public service record while urging respect for veteran leaders, including ODM leader Oburu Oginga, amid ongoing political exchanges with EALA MP Winnie Odinga.

Speaking in Homa Bay on Saturday, Mbadi dismissed criticism, asserting that his extensive experience in party leadership and government positions should not be undermined by those without similar political backgrounds.

He highlighted his years in Parliament and leadership roles, including a decade as chairman of ODM under Raila Odinga and five years as Minority Leader.

“I have achieved significant milestones in my career, including my current role as minister,” he stated.

Mbadi cautioned against what he called “juvenile politics” in public discussions.

“Respect Oburu Oginga. You cannot advise me on my role as Finance Minister,” he asserted.

He rejected claims that his position was open to critique from non-elected individuals, emphasizing that true leadership stems from electoral legitimacy.

“Before advising me, seek an elective position and earn respect as a leader,” he said.

He expressed confidence in his political future and his readiness for national leadership, stating, “I am prepared to lead this country, even as president. Who says I cannot?”

These comments followed Odinga’s criticism of some government officials, particularly regarding the National Treasury, which she emphasized should remain free from political disputes.

“The National Treasury is a vital institution that safeguards our economic stability,” she remarked during Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka’s burial on Friday, reinforcing that it should not be treated as a political office.
