Kalonzo Proposes Azimio–United Opposition Merger Ahead of 2027 Polls

Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front, has suggested a potential merger between the United Opposition and the Azimio la Umoja coalition. In an interview aired on March 27, 2026, Musyoka, now the leader of Azimio la Umoja following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, expressed his commitment to uniting his colleagues from both the United Alternative Government and the former Azimio coalition.

As the convener of the United Opposition, Musyoka emphasized that with the general elections approaching, there is no need to establish a new coalition. He proposed the idea of simply rebranding the existing coalition instead.

“I’m honored to step into my friend Raila’s role as the leader of Azimio La Umoja. We are exploring ways to bring my colleagues together, considering that we already have a coalition in place,” he stated. “Rather than starting a new registration process, we can focus on a name change to include everyone. We recognize the urgency, as we have only 14 or 15 months left.”

He indicated that this topic will be among several discussed during an upcoming three-day retreat for the United Opposition in Mombasa, following their “meet the people” tours in Ukambani beginning on March 30, 2026.

In a related development, Karoli Omondi, the newly appointed Secretary General and parliamentary group leader of Azimio la Umoja, announced plans to restructure the coalition. He aims to ensure that the presidential candidate and running mate for the United Opposition emerge from the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

Omondi highlighted the importance of acknowledging communities that have historically supported Raila Odinga, particularly those in Nyanza, who are currently awaiting guidance from the United Opposition. He stressed the need for the region to reciprocate the support it has given over the years.

Additionally, he criticized his party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), for not initiating pre-coalition discussions internally within Azimio la Umoja before engaging in talks with the government.

This shift in strategy coincides with recent actions by Azimio la Umoja chairman Uhuru Kenyatta, who appears to be revitalizing the coalition ahead of the 2027 elections. Kenyatta has implemented significant changes, removing officials who have defected to the government, especially those from ODM, and appointing new members who remain aligned with the coalition’s vision.
