Kenyan Fligt Diverts to Moroni After Runway Closure in Mayotte

On March 15, 2026, Kenya Airways flight KQ254, en route from Nairobi to Dzaoudzi in Mayotte, successfully diverted to Moroni in the Comoros due to the closure of the runway at Dzaoudzi Airport.

Airport authorities closed the runway after a disabled third-party aircraft obstructed it, hindering any landings. The flight crew adhered to standard safety protocols and opted to divert to Prince Said Ibrahim Airport (HAH) in Moroni, prioritizing safety over circling or attempting a risky landing. The aircraft refueled in Moroni while awaiting updates from Dzaoudzi.

The plane landed safely in Moroni at approximately 1400 local time, with no reports of injuries or other issues.

Kenya Airways Corporate Communications stated, “In line with standard safety procedures, the flight crew elected to divert to Moroni while awaiting further updates from the destination airport authorities.”

The airline confirmed the safe landing, noting, “The aircraft landed safely in Moroni at approximately 1400 hrs local time.”

Kenya Airways is committed to ensuring safety and is actively monitoring the situation, promising to provide updates as soon as the runway at Dzaoudzi reopens. The airline also pledged to arrange onward travel for passengers promptly.

In a statement of empathy, Kenya Airways expressed, “We sincerely apologize to our guests for the inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience and understanding. The safety of our customers and crew remains our highest priority.”

Flights like KQ254 play a crucial role in connecting Nairobi to Mayotte, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean. In instances like this, Comoros frequently serves as an alternative landing point.

While runway blockages caused by disabled aircraft are uncommon, they necessitate swift action to ensure safety. Airlines must make prompt decisions to protect passengers and crew.

Kenya Airways encourages travelers to stay updated through its official channels or the airport. The airline will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide timely information regarding the resumption of flights to Dzaoudzi.

Passengers should remain informed and be prepared for potential changes to their travel plans.
