Bobi Wine Decries Ordeal Prisoners Undergo in Uganda

Uganda’s opposition leader Bobi Wine has sounded a new warning. He points to rising cases of kidnappings, beatings, and long jail terms for government critics. Many activists sit in prison without trial. This happens as the nation looks back on deaths in 2025.

Bobi Wine shared a statement on X last Thursday, January 1, 2026. The National Unity Platform head described deep fear and pain for families of jailed supporters. Unanswered questions linger. He said this pain carries into the new year.

The year’s end calls for more than grief over the dead. It must honor those crushed by force, driven into exile, or locked away. They sought real political change.

We recall those lost in 2025. But think also of the abducted, tortured, vanished, exiled, killed, or scared silent. All for backing a new Uganda, Bobi Wine wrote.

He highlighted a close ally’s case. It shows how the regime treats opposition backers.

State agents grabbed him on April 27, 2025. Dictator’s man Eddie Mutwe tortured him near death. He stays in prison, untreated and untried, the statement says.

Bobi Wine said this is common. Other prisoners mark years in jail with no court date. Families get no peace or justice.

Machete Yasin and Ashraf Kalanzi have spent five years in Kitalya without trial. He wrote that.

The list keeps growing. It includes top party members and young voices. Their crime? Speaking up.

Add Deputy Spokesperson Waiswa Mufumbiro. Also comrades Olivia Lutaaya, Achileo Kivumbi, Bobi Young, and more, Bobi Wine wrote.

He brought up veteran foe Kizza Besigye’s arrest. Questions still swirl about it in the region.

Two years back, on November 16, 2024, agents snatched Besigye from Kenya. They sneaked him into Uganda and jailed him. He remains there today.

Bobi Wine warned of worse ahead. No accountability means fear and crackdowns will rule politics.
