Kenya Inflation Rises to 4.5% as Prices Increase in December

Kenya’s National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reports basic goods prices climbed more in December 2025 than in December 2024. This drove up the yearly inflation rate.

KNBS released its Kenya Consumer Price Index and Inflation Report on December 31, 2025. It shows annual consumer price inflation at 4.5% for December 2025.

Overall prices stood 4.5% higher in December 2025 than in December 2024. Food and non-alcoholic drinks jumped 7.8%. Transport rose 5.2%. Housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels increased 1.6%.

These three categories hold over 57% of the weight among 13 major spending groups, per the report.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures price changes over time for a fixed basket of goods and services. Weights match consumer spending habits.

CPI compares today’s prices to a base month: February 2019.

Inflation rate is the percent change in CPI between periods. It can be year-on-year, quarter-to-quarter, or month-to-month.

Field teams gather data monthly from retail outlets in urban areas. They cover 50 zones nationwide during the second and third weeks.

Overall CPI climbed from 147.08 in November 2025 to 148.02 in December 2025. Monthly inflation reached 0.6%. Year-on-year inflation stood at 4.5%.
