Oscar Sudi Pays Tribute to Former MP Cyrus Jirongo

Oscar Sudi, the Member of Parliament for Kapseret, has issued a statement detailing the exceptional attributes of the late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Shakhalaga Jirongo, who tragically passed away in a road accident at Karai, situated along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway, on Saturday, December 13, 2025.

In an extensive declaration made on the same date, Sudi revealed that he functioned as Jirongo’s assistant for a period exceeding three years, from 2009 to mid-2012.

Offering an insight into their professional association, the articulate legislator explained that the deceased consistently found ways to instill optimism in his staff, even during periods of financial constraint.

According to Sudi, Jirongo possessed a remarkable persuasive ability, which frequently alleviated financial concerns among his employees.

Sudi’s statement partially read: “Jirongo was my previous superior, and I was afforded the honor of collaborating closely with him for three and a half years, from 2009 to mid-2012, as his dependable assistant, where I directly observed his commitment, fervor, and benevolence.”

He further added: “A particularly striking aspect of Jirongo was his talent for instilling hope. Even when he lacked funds, he would assure you that money would become available within the hour. Jirongo would confidently assert that financial difficulties would be resolved, with such conviction that one would genuinely believe the solution was already in place.”

Inspiring Demeanor

Beyond his astute management of financial affairs, Sudi noted that the late Jirongo continuously motivated those around him.

“He was a genuine leader who challenged established norms and inspired his peers,” Sudi penned, simultaneously extending his sympathies to Jirongo’s relatives and acquaintances.

Historical Overview

Jirongo first gained national recognition in 1992 as the influential chairman of the YK92 advocacy group, an organization vital in campaigning for the re-election of the late former President Daniel Arap Moi.

He served two terms as Lugari MP, initially from 1997 to 2002 under the Kanu party, and subsequently from 2007 to 2013 as a parliamentarian for the Kenya African Democratic Development Union.

Jirongo was later affiliated with the United Democratic Party and the Federal Party of Kenya.

During the concluding months of the Moi administration, which concluded in December 2002, he briefly held a Cabinet position as the Minister for Rural Development.

Jirongo also harbored presidential aspirations, notably participating in the 2017 Kenyan General Election, where he secured a mere 11,282 votes in the August ballot and only 3,832 in the subsequent election held in October of the same year, after the initial vote was nullified by the Supreme Court.

He passed away following a collision between his vehicle and a bus. His remains were subsequently transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi, awaiting preparation for burial.
