Waiguru Rejects Alliance With Gachagua Ahead of 2027 Elections

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has declared that she will not be aligning with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.

Waiguru’s stance against collaborating with Gachagua emerges amidst heightened political realignments in the Mt Kenya region, where the former Deputy President is advocating for Central Kenya unity in an effort to challenge President William Ruto.

Speaking on Friday, December 5, 2025, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC–Kirinyaga Central Campus), Waiguru asserted her unwillingness to work with Gachagua due to his impeachment from office in October 2024. She noted that this political setback renders him constitutionally ineligible to contest any elective position, according to the 2010 Constitution.

Waiguru firmly distanced herself from Gachagua’s political aspirations, urging her constituents to remain patient as the elections are still distant. She highlighted her active role as a working governor, contrasting it with Gachagua’s situation, and questioned, “If an individual lacks an official capacity, what leadership can they offer?” She further explained that Gachagua’s inability to vie for office is a constitutional matter, just as she is barred from seeking a third term as Kirinyaga Governor. Waiguru concluded by questioning the rationale of following a leader whose political future is uncertain or constitutionally restricted.

Meanwhile, Rigathi Gachagua has been accusing Governor Anne Waiguru, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, and other Mt Kenya leaders affiliated with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party of being manipulated by President Ruto to sow division in the region for political gain ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has issued a sharp rebuke to Rigathi Gachagua, defending Governors Mbarire and Waiguru against his recent criticisms.

In a message posted on his social media accounts on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Kindiki commenced by commending the two leaders for what he described as their distinguished and patriotic service to the nation. He stated, “Governors Anne Waiguru and Cecily Mbarire have served our country commendably as exemplary and accomplished political figures.” He added that “They have held diverse senior roles in governance and political spheres, clearly outperforming inexperienced, conceited individuals attempting to intimidate them into compliance.”
