Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for deeper cooperation between China and Uruguay, highlighting opportunities for expanded collaboration in trade, technology, green development, and cultural exchanges.
Xi made the remarks as President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi, began a week-long state visit to China on Sunday. The visit marks Orsi’s first official trip to China since taking office and comes at a time when China is seeking to strengthen ties with Latin American countries.
During the visit, the two leaders are expected to hold talks focused on boosting bilateral relations, enhancing economic cooperation, and exploring new areas of mutual interest. Xi emphasized the importance of practical cooperation that delivers tangible benefits to both countries, particularly in sustainable development and innovation.
President Orsi’s visit is significant, as he is the first Latin American leader to visit China in 2026. His trip follows recent visits by leaders from Ireland, the Republic of Korea, Canada, Finland, and Britain, reflecting China’s continued diplomatic engagement with countries across different regions.
China and Uruguay have maintained steady relations over the years, with growing cooperation in trade and agriculture. Observers say the current visit could further strengthen ties and open new pathways for collaboration in emerging sectors such as clean energy, digital technology, and people-to-people exchanges.
The visit is expected to conclude with agreements aimed at deepening strategic cooperation and reinforcing friendship between the two nations.
