Detectives are actively investigating an incident involving the tragic death of a senior officer from the Kenya Prisons Service. Senior Superintendent of Prisons (SSP) Eric Kiarie Wainaina, 40, was discovered unresponsive in his car, located in an open field behind Spur Mall in Juja, Kiambu County, on Sunday morning.
The community alerted the police about the situation via telephone at approximately 10:30 AM. Upon arrival at the scene, authorities found Wainaina seated and leaning against the open driver’s door of a silver Nissan Wingroad.
Senior police officials and high-ranking officers from the Kenya Prisons Service, including the Kiambu County Prisons Commander, visited the site to assess the situation. Crime scene investigators from Juja meticulously processed and documented the area.

Authorities confirmed Wainaina’s identity using his Certificate of Appointment, driving license, and passport, all located within the vehicle. Additionally, they recovered his mobile phone, alongside three empty 250ml spirit bottles, an empty water bottle, and hypertension medication. Investigators also discovered a bag containing personal clothing and shoes believed to belong to the officer.
Witnesses informed the police that Wainaina frequently visited the location where he was found. As of the report, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. His body has been transferred to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital mortuary for preservation, pending a thorough autopsy.
In a separate incident, a 63-year-old man named John Mukule Nzuve from Maviani village was found deceased at the entrance of a homestead in Mbuvo, Kathonzweni Subcounty, Makueni County. He was discovered lying lifeless at the gate on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
Upon police arrival, they observed Nzuve’s body on the ground, facing upwards, with visible blood on his face and a cut on his forehead. Crime Scene Investigation officers documented the scene before transferring the body to Capital Morgue in Kathonzweni for preservation, pending an autopsy.
Authorities have initiated investigations into the circumstances surrounding Nzuve’s death, but as of Monday, no arrests have been made.
