Transforming Education workshop paves way for Africa’s Renaissance

The Global Peace Foundation Kenya, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Crawford International School, Sunrise Virtual School, Oracle Kenya, Family Peace Association, and UNICAF Kenya, recently hosted the 3rd Transforming Education in the Global South Workshop.

Held under the theme “Transforming Education: Cultivating Lifelong Character and Holistic Growth,” the two-day event brought together educators and leaders to explore innovative approaches to education that could serve as a catalyst for Africa’s renaissance.

The workshop, which took place in Nairobi, focused on the African Union’s 2024 theme, “Educating an African Fit for the 21st Century.” Participants were encouraged to critically reassess the role of education in shaping the continent’s future. Dr. Tony Devine, Vice President for Education at Global Peace Foundation International, emphasized that transformative change must begin with educators themselves. “By unlocking their potential and grounding them in vision, values, and character, we can create a ripple effect that impacts students and society at large,” he said.

Rev. Fr. Canice Chinyeka Enyiaka, PhD., International Program Development Specialist for Africa at Global Peace Foundation International, highlighted the importance of the African Renaissance. He urged participants to envision a future where education serves as the foundation for nurturing a continent rich in moral and intellectual capital.

Key Topics and Outcomes

The workshop covered a range of topics, including:

  1. The Africa Renaissance
  2. Visualizing the True Purpose and Future of Education
  3. The Foundation of Character
  4. The Holistic Development of Educators and Students
  5. Moral and Innovative Leadership
  6. Transforming Education Blueprint

One of the key outcomes of the workshop was the establishment of a Transforming Education support ecosystem, comprising 15 stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, Global Peace Foundation Kenya, Sunrise Virtual School, Oracle Kenya, and several educational institutions. This coalition aims to revolutionize education through collaboration and shared vision.

Another significant achievement was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Global Peace Foundation Kenya and Sunrise Virtual School. The agreement aims to expedite the global adoption of the Transforming Education Model by providing educators across Africa with access to Sunrise Virtual School’s comprehensive online training platform. Currently operational in 30 countries, the platform serves over 800 students in classrooms and has more than 5,000 registered students worldwide.

The workshop also unveiled the Transforming Education Blueprint, a strategic framework outlining a 10-point agenda for national transformation through education. The blueprint emphasizes the need to align educational practices with broader societal goals to achieve sustainable progress.

Phase 4 of Transforming Education Initiative

The event marked the commencement of Phase 4 of the Transforming Education initiative, which targets education policymakers, including officials from the Ministry of Education, regional directors of education, and quality assurance officers. This phase seeks to strengthen the policy foundation necessary for a systemic overhaul of education across regions.

Partners and Media Coverage

The workshop was graced by numerous partners, including Crawford International School, Regies School Runda, Kigwa Ridge School, State House Primary and Junior Secondary School, and the University of Nairobi, among others. Media coverage of the event included a video recap available on YouTube and an article in The Standard discussing the challenges of moral decay among youth due to a lack of parental guidance and the pursuit of material wealth.
