The Equitable Party has become Edwin Sifuna’s political platform for the 2027 presidential election, ushering in a new era for a party that predates his involvement.
On Sunday, October 4, 2026, Sifuna was announced as the party leader and presidential candidate, as the party restructured to align with the political network linked to the Linda Mwananchi Movement.
Party Background
The Equitable Party officially registered on March 25, 2022, with the party certificate serial number 100. Based in Nairobi, its slogan, “Tusawazishe,” translates to “Let us equalize.”
The party originally focused on equity, social and economic justice, fair resource distribution, and community empowerment. It also championed responsible public resource management, sustainable development, environmental conservation, and climate action as part of its core philosophy.
Founders of The Equitable Party
Sifuna is not the founder of The Equitable Party. Before his leadership, the party was established by founding members Eunice Juma and Kerry Karani. Karani served as the national chairman, while economist Gilbert Marava Shanga led the party until the recent restructuring, which allowed Sifuna to step in and use it as his platform for the 2027 presidential race.
This transition transformed a relatively unknown political entity into a significant player in the opposition alliance associated with Sifuna.
Connection to Linda Mwananchi
The takeover occurred amidst challenges in formalizing the Linda Mwananchi Movement as a political party. Sifuna and his allies aimed to establish this movement as an opposition platform, but disputes over the name led to complications, reaching the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal for resolution.
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, Sifuna’s team opted for an already registered party, providing a legal framework for their movement.
Leadership Transition
During the unveiling on October 4 in Nairobi, Shanga announced leadership changes to welcome Sifuna and his supporters. This positioned Sifuna as the party leader and presidential candidate, equipping him with a solid platform to pursue his ambitions for State House.
The gathering included notable politicians from the broader opposition, uniting efforts to present an alternative to President William Ruto’s administration.
Evolution from Small Party to State House Vehicle
The Equitable Party’s transformation illustrates how Kenya’s opposition is strategically preparing for the 2027 General Election. Instead of starting a new party, Sifuna’s camp embraced an existing registered platform while maintaining the political identity tied to Linda Mwananchi.
Sifuna has hinted at the possibility of rebranding The Equitable Party as the Linda Mwananchi Movement, suggesting that its current identity may be temporary as he and his allies solidify their political foundation before the presidential race.
Sifuna’s Strategic Choice
Sifuna’s selection of The Equitable Party highlights the challenges he has encountered in finding a definitive political vehicle for his presidential aspirations. Ongoing disputes over the Linda Mwananchi name and the emergence of other political factions have complicated efforts to unify the opposition.
As the election draws near, The Equitable Party now serves as Sifuna’s established platform, allowing him to structure the broader Linda Mwananchi initiative into a focused presidential campaign. For the time being, The Equitable Party stands as the formal vehicle through which Sifuna aims to advance the Linda Mwananchi political vision into a successful presidential campaign.
