Shock and laughter as Ruto dances to Kasongo song

In a lively New Year celebration at the Kisii State Lodge, President William Ruto brought joy and laughter as he danced to the infectious rhythms of the song “Kasongo.”

Accompanied by First Lady Rachel Ruto and several prominent leaders from the Nyanza region, the President led Kenyans in ushering in 2025 with enthusiasm.

The song “Kasongo,” originally performed by the legendary Super Mazembe, has recently experienced a resurgence in Kenya, becoming a cultural touchstone linked to social and political commentary. It has even been playfully adopted by some online users as a nickname for Ruto’s administration, highlighting its growing significance in the political landscape.

Among the attendees dancing alongside Ruto were Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, and South Migirano MP Silvanus Osoro. This vibrant gathering marked a departure from the tradition of past presidential New Year addresses, which were typically delivered from Mombasa.

Originally written by the iconic Alley Katele, “Kasongo” tells the poignant tale of a woman pleading for her estranged husband to return home. The song has been creatively reinterpreted on social media, with satirical lyrics that poke fun at Kenya’s political leadership, generating a mix of reactions from the public.

The origins of “Kasongo” trace back to a visit by Super Mazembe band members to their friend Kasongo in Eastleigh, Nairobi. Upon finding his wife concerned for his whereabouts, they decided to craft a musical message urging him to return home. This heartfelt creation has since become a beloved classic, further immortalized by its connection to contemporary political discourse.

As Ruto danced, the atmosphere was filled with cheers, laughter, and a sense of community. The light-hearted event highlighted the power of music in reflecting the sentiments of the nation, leaving many Kenyans both entertained and contemplative about the current state of affairs in their country.
