Senate clears Governor Waiguru of Impeachment charges

The Senate has cleared Kirinyaga Governor of all charges leveled against her by Kirinyaga MCAs.

According to the committee report table in the Senate this afternoon by the Chairman of the Senate Impeachment Committee Senator Cleophas Malala, the allegations against the Governor did not meet the thresh-hold used by the Senate in two previous cases involving the Kericho Governor in 2014 and the Governor of Muranga in 2015.

In the Kericho case, the Senate  committee chaired by Kisii Senator Chris Obure tabled its report after 10 days of investigating charges leveled against Governor Chepkwony by members of the Kericho County Assembly and ruled that the charges did not meet the threshold to warrant the Governor’s impeachment.

In the Muranga case, a motion to impeach embattled Murang’a County Governor Mwangi Wa Iria sailed through after 34 out of the 49 members of the county assembly voted for his removal. According to the Senate, allegation must be serious, substantial and weighty to meet the threshold of impeachment.

The Malala committee expressed its dissatisfaction with the conduct of the Governor  and called on the Senate to invite the Kirinyaga County Assembly  for a join session with the Governor to restore a harmonious relationship between the Governor and the County Assembly.

The Committee also called for further investigation into the conduct of specific officers namely Waine Gichira, Pauline Kariuki, and the Supplies Chain Manager  Carilus Otieno and ordered that they step aside for investigation.  The committee also ordered the investigation into the companies that won the questionable tenders in Kirinyaga county.
