The family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has established a committee, led by Prof. Adams Oloo, to coordinate commemorative activities in anticipation of the first anniversary of his passing.
In a statement released on Sunday, September 13, 2026, the Raila Odinga family announced that this committee will oversee the activities scheduled for the week of October 15, with a comprehensive program to be unveiled shortly.
The family expressed that this anniversary will serve as a poignant opportunity for Baba’s supporters to reflect on his legacy, mourn his loss, celebrate his life, and honor the shared experiences they cherished with him.
“As we approach the first anniversary of our beloved Raila Amolo Odinga’s passing, we recognize that Baba belonged to the people,” the statement emphasized.
The family acknowledged that countless generations of Kenyans journeyed alongside Raila Odinga through both triumphs and challenges, celebrating his victories, believing in his vision, and making his journey a part of their own.
They also noted that many of his supporters did not have the chance to grieve or bid farewell in the immediate aftermath of his death.
“As his family, this deeply resonates with us,” the statement added.
Invitation to Participation
The family warmly invites anyone interested in participating, supporting, or organizing activities for the anniversary commemoration to collaborate with the committee. This approach will ensure effective coordination, inclusivity, and a meaningful tribute.
The family reassured Raila’s supporters that everyone who walked with him would be welcomed, regardless of their community, generation, or region in the country.
“This anniversary does not belong to an individual or an institution; it belongs to the people whose lives Baba profoundly impacted,” the family stated.
This message was conveyed on behalf of the Raila Amolo Odinga family on September 13, 2026.
Anniversary Preparations
This announcement precedes a month-long celebration to honor the first anniversary of the former Prime Minister’s death. Raila Odinga passed away while receiving treatment in Kerala, India, after a prolonged illness.
Preparations for the anniversary are already underway at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Siaya, where a mausoleum is being constructed to honor the late former Prime Minister. This project is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage, the Ministry of Defence, and the Raila Odinga family.
The mausoleum is anticipated to be completed by October, aligning with the commencement of the planned anniversary celebrations, which will unite Raila’s family, political allies, supporters, and Kenyans who resonate with his political journey.
