Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has outlined specific terms for his potential alignment with the beleaguered Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna’s team.
On the evening of Saturday, February 21, 2026, Salasya took to his official X account to direct pointed criticisms at Sifuna and his associates, accusing them of inconsistency and a lack of resilience when confronted with political challenges.
He emphasized that he would only consider joining the team if they fulfilled certain prerequisites.
The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) legislator asserted that he would align with Sifuna’s camp only if they formally withdraw from the ODM party and unite with what he described as “the rest of Kenyans who seek change.”
Salasya positioned himself as a leader who has faced significant state pressure, referencing his dramatic arrest by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
He contrasted his experience with what he perceived as hesitance among some opposition figures who retreated after encountering police teargas during recent political events.
“We used to hold 10 meetings a day for three consecutive months until my arrest by armed DCI officers. In contrast, they have only managed four meetings in one month, frightened by a teargas canister, and are now calling for a month-long sabbatical—this is absurd. I will only extend my support if they withdraw from ODM and join the rest of Kenyans who desire change,” Salasya asserted.
Sifuna was teargassed shortly after he took the podium to deliver his speech at the Linda Ground in Kakamega County on the same day.
In his remarks, Sifuna condemned President William Ruto for orchestrating the teargas assault on the attendees.
Despite the chaos, Sifuna declared that the meeting would continue unimpeded, as the residents of Kakamega endured the teargas while attentively listening to the embattled ODM leader.
Previously, Salasya characterized the unfolding political drama surrounding Sifuna’s potential ouster as a calculated strategy aimed at misleading Kenyans in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election.
On Thursday, February 12, 2026, he expressed on his official X account that Sifuna’s purported struggle outside ODM, while publicly professing loyalty to the party, serves as a tactic designed to create a deceptive sense of opposition for those disenchanted with President Ruto’s administration.
“Kenyans, this is part of a broader scheme to ensnare you in confusion ahead of 2027. Sifuna’s so-called ‘fight’ outside ODM, while professing loyalty, is a tactic to entice those rejecting Ruto’s regime into a misleading perception of opposition,” Salasya articulated.
