Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege has passionately defended Deputy President Kithure Kindiki amidst rising speculation about the potential removal of key powers from his office, asserting that these claims lack merit.
During a recent interview with a local media outlet on July 29, 2026, the former Murang’a Woman Representative expressed her strong support for the Deputy President, emphasizing that the narrative has been exaggerated and that Kindiki remains dedicated to fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities.
“This situation is not new; the professor is not facing any siege. He is simply focused on his work. As we approach a time when everyone is vying for their political space, it’s important to stay grounded,” she stated.
Chege pointed out that the nation has entered a politically charged season, with leaders from various parties striving to secure their positions ahead of the 2027 general election.
She referenced the recent endorsement of Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya by Suna East MP and ODM Director of Elections Junet Mohamed as the party’s preferred deputy presidential candidate, which has been interpreted by some as a slight against Kindiki. However, she firmly stated that this endorsement does not indicate any threat to the Deputy President’s standing.
According to Chege, Kindiki’s position remains stable, and there is no internal conflict within the Kenya Kwanza administration regarding his role.
Amidst these discussions, some voices have raised concerns that Kindiki might be encountering challenges similar to those faced by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua prior to his impeachment. Gachagua has urged Kindiki to exercise caution, suggesting that a similar political maneuvering could be in play. He has also advised his supporters within the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) to refrain from attacking Kindiki, reaffirming that he is still “one of their own.”
In response to the swirling rumors, Kindiki has categorically rejected claims that significant responsibilities from his office have been reassigned to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, including the chairmanship of the Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council (IBEC). He labeled these reports as false and dismissed them as mere misinformation.
