Raila Odinga on AUC race: Winning is not a matter of life and death

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has downplayed the urgency surrounding his bid for the chairperson position of the African Union Commission (AUC), asserting that it is not a matter of life and death for him.

While acknowledging the presence of formidable competitors, Odinga expressed his readiness to return to his activities in Kenya if he does not secure the seat.

Speaking at the burial of Mzee Richard Oudia in Bondo constituency, Odinga conveyed his confidence in winning the position, highlighting his commitment to serving the African continent. His comments came against a backdrop of heated debates, with his elder brother, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, criticizing human rights activists and politicians for what he termed selective advocacy regarding recent abductions.

Oburu pointed out the inconsistency of those who are now vocal about justice, noting their silence during the violent aftermath of the 2022 elections when Azimio supporters lost their lives. He emphasized that the demand for justice should encompass all victims, urging leaders to also address compensation for those shot by police during the post-election demonstrations, rather than exhibiting a selective approach to justice.

Among the other contenders for the AUC chairperson role are H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti and H.E. Richard Randriamandrato from Madagascar.

H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf – Djibouti
A seasoned politician, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has served as Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, bringing a wealth of diplomatic experience to his candidacy. He is recognized for his active role in promoting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa and his commitment to regional integration and development. Youssouf envisions a united and prosperous Africa, advocating for collaboration among nations to address shared challenges.

H.E. Richard Randriamandrato – Madagascar
H.E. Richard Randriamandrato is another distinguished candidate, bringing extensive experience as a politician and diplomat from Madagascar. With a solid background in law and international relations, he has held various government positions, including Minister of Foreign Affairs. Randriamandrato is known for his efforts to advance Madagascar’s foreign policy and foster partnerships within the African Union. His candidacy is rooted in the belief that African solutions are essential to African problems, coupled with a strong commitment to economic development and security across the continent.

As the race for the AUC chairperson intensifies, candidates like Odinga, Youssouf, and Randriamandrato are poised to play pivotal roles in shaping the future of Africa. Their diverse experiences and visions for the continent will be crucial in addressing the challenges that lie ahead.
